Hey everyone. Today was the first time in my life I've ever been hypnotized, which is funny considering I hypnotize people a lot. Anyway I was never actually put into trance but I did feel sort of like I was in a dream, it was really weird. After the brief routine I went out of trance and felt light headed. My vision started blackening and my head got really heavy. I could barely stand up. I went to the floor and leaned against a box on the side for a few minutes where I was brought some water and a slice of pizza to see if that helped. After a brief relaxation re induction I woke up again and was fine after a few minutes of rest. I still have no idea what happened. Can anyone clarify what happened to me?

Hey everyone. My final project for Biology is coming up and my teacher gave us a pretty cool assignment. We're allowed to run a complete experiment on anything we want. I've chosen to do an experiment in hypnosis, sort of like what Derren Brown does. I may mention him in my report but probably won't do to the fact that I'm one of the only people in my school who knows who he is. Anyway, my experiment is designed to find out whether or not peoples perception of what hypnosis is effects what they do while under hypnosis. Basically I'm going to give two separate people two different definitions of hypnosis, use two different inductions and see what each will and will not do. Both people are highly suggestible and volunteer beforehand to avoid fear. everything I do from pretalk to induction to awakening is going to be recorded in a video camera and the video, one edited for presentation and one unedited for teacher purposes if anyone will be interested will be on Youtube by the end of the school year. I was wondering if anyone would be interested in supplying me with some different variations on suggestions, what hypnosis is, etc so I have extra documents to my project. Also if anyone has any questions or comments, please comment.

Hey everyone. First off I want to apologize for being EXTREMELY inconsistent with my posts on here. I've been having a few issues that needed taking care of and I'll still be studying a lot for Finals so I may not be on here as much as I like until after that's all over. Anyway, I've been getting hired for more and more parties now and I'd like to really add to the experience by being more than just "that guy that walks around doing card tricks." I just started working on a stage routine that includes hypnosis and mentalism. The show is obviously going to be split into two different parts. One part mentalism and one part hypnosis. The mentalism part is probably going to be primarily focused on a blindfolded sight routine with a little PK touch routine and possibly some cold reading and pulse stopping depending on if I get good enough at them and if they fit the time frame I want. The hypnosis part would start out with some entertaining suggestibility tests and volunteers coming up to chairs like most hypnosis shows do. I might lead the blindfold routine right into the hypnosis so I can do the inductions blindfolded for originality but I'm not very sure how good of an idea that is. I basically need some help coming up with an order of what kind of hypnosis routines and inductions to do and how best to do it in a time frame of about 90 minutes (the mentalism part of my show will be about 20-30 minutes and the hypnosis part will take up the majority). If anyone has any suggestions, I'd greatly appreciate it. Also, If anyone wants to add ideas for other routines I'd be happy to listen. Thank you for reading.

By this i mean like the 1-5 counting to get them fully awaken from their trance state?

Or -

does the stage hypnotist wake them up after every "skit", or does he just suggest that their eyes are open.

because when i suggest that their eyes are open they look at me like they are dead.... lol but i dont think its very healthy to complety wake them from trance after every suggestion..

Thanks for the help ahead of time.

Hello!
Recently, I have been studying up on hypnosis, and whenever I try to hypnotise someone, it doesn't work. :( I try to hypnotise friends at my school, but they usually think it is a bit funny, and I try to use that as my advantage during hypnosis and say something like "The more you find this funny, the deeper you go into this wonderful state of hypnosis". I am not sure what I am doing wrong. I know I am doing the pre talks good. I will give you kind of what I say when I try to hypnotise them. I usually try to use a rapid induction, like the magnetic hands, in which I tell them I am about to turn a magnet on that will slowly bring your hands together, and the moment they touch, you will go into a deep trance. The magnet is turned on... now. (Person slowly bringing their hands together) Good, now remember the moment they touch, you will go into a deep trance ( I gently, but suddenly, push their hands together) Sleep! Go all the way down now. Going deeper and deeper and deeper into this wonderful state of hypnosis. I am going to count down from 3 to 0, when I reach 0 you will go 50 times deeper into hypnosis. 3, 2, 1, 0, 50 times deeper now. Now I am going to count down from 10 to 1, when I reach 1, you will be in the deepest, most wonderful part of hypnosis. 10, going deeper and deeper. 9, slowly approaching the bottom, the most deepest, most wonderful state of hypnosis. 8, going deeper and deeper, getting faster and faster. 7, With every word you hear you go 10 times deeper into this wonderful state of hypnosis. 6, feeling completely relaxed, and focused on my voice as you go deeper and deeper into hypnosis. 5, halfway to the bottom now. 4, going faster and deeper, approaching the bottom. 3, going deeper and deeper, going at hyper speed towards the bottom, feeling great. 2, almost to the bottom now, feeling wonderful, going deeper and deeper. 1, at the bottom now in the deepest, most wonderful state of hypnosis. Now focus only on my voice. Whatever I say is the absolute truth, whatever I say you will believe. You will temporarily forget your name. You will not be able to remember your name. It will be as thought there is a word on the tip of your tongue, yet no matter how hard you try to say it, you just can't. You will not be able to remember your name at all. You will completely forget your name. Now, I am going to wake you up, and when you wake up you will not remember your name. When you wake up, you will feel refreshed and awesome. I am going to count from 1 to 5. When I reach 5 you will wake up and feel completely awesome. 1, slowly rising now. 2, getting faster and faster. 3, halfway there now. 4, almost to the top now, becoming aware of your surroundings. 5, wake up!
This is pretty much how it goes, though it is probably a little different. I am not sure why it won't work. I am guessing maybe the person doesn't believe or thinks it is just silly, no matter what I tell him. I am completely confident. Thank you very much for reading this all! :)

Today the weather here in San Diego was horrible, so I went to a restaurant took my book and sat, read and drank.
A person came in and looked at the title of my book and asked if I was a psychotherapist. I explained I wasn't and told him what I did and what my credentials are.

He turned out to be an NLP practitioner, so he joined the table and we chatted.

Soon the discussion (much like yesterday with the non-smoking) came to visualization. I explained that the science is not backing NLPs visualization techniques. Visualizing yourself in that size 32 jeans, looking your best is not going to make you any thinner. HELL, science even proved that it can actually make you thicker.

The argument was friendly but heated! I'd definitely stepped on his 'religion'!

He claimed that NLP had solid proof that visualization does work and is a very good force to self-motivate and make you feel happy. I explained that the latter is true, when you visualize yourself in that size 32 jeans, it does make you feel happy... Briefly but happy but it doesn't help at all with the goals.

I quoted a nice piece of social-psychological studies at Harvard where they asked one group of students to visualize getting a good grade for an upcoming test and the control group to not visualize. What happened was, that the visualization group had significant lower grades than the non-visualization group and the rest of the class. It reaffirmed the fact that when we visualize a goal we actually start to believe we've reached that goal and become lax. As shown in the study journals that the two groups were instructed to keep. The visualization group actually studied 15-23% less than the control, obviously a direct cause of the lower test scores!

So I asked the guy to proof his statements. He took out his blackberry tablet (very nice!) and showed some unaccredited junk from several NLP training institutions, claiming 'scientific research has proven'. But no references to the research, I actually have my study book with me and got it from my room and showed the many chapters with detailed studies and why visualization doesn't work on a cognitive level.

Soon the defense went to the fact that you have to do visualization in a "trance" state.... *sigh* So I asked him to define a trance state, sitting with your eyes closed completely absorbed in a mental image is a trance like state in most hypnotists handbook.

He then put a nail in his coffin by saying: "No! A skilled hypnotists has to induce a trance state that's the only way you get into a real trance." So I laughed and mockingly said: "So all those NLP self help books and trainings about self change are nonsense because you can not do it by yourself?"

Well here came the struckling: yes, no not quiet etc etc etc

Soon the discussion shifted (sign that he did not have any counter arguments) to modalities. I explained that working with modalities is indeed a first step but not a cure in itself. I also explained that actually pushing against a table or wall as you get rid of a negative image will engage the natural "push off" patterns we all have but that the mental image is still in the brain and that the 'reduced' negative feelings can help with actual therapy but that most stable people do not have very emotive reactions.

He was amazed to hear about the 'push pull' theory and conditioning, priming. I actually performed my old lecture effect, Prime Time on him completely ungimmicked to show how easy it was to slow a person down.

So why do people still teach these ridiculous visualization techniques? Especially in multi-thousand dollar courses?

NLP and Hypnotherapy has nothing todo with science and therapy any more but how to earn money from ignorant students who want to learn but simply choose the wrong institutions to learn. NLP and Hypnotherapy has become nothing short of religion in its most basic form.

Shouldn't science rule? Where bold statements and questions are actually tested and retested before making a definite conclusion?

Then they use this trigger word after they wake up when they're not expecting it (eg. in the middle of their sentence) and the subject went straight into trance again.
Now I've tried planting a trigger word when my subject was under. I said "when I snap my fingers and say the word 'sleep' you will come right back into this state, because you are so comfortable and so relaxed right now, you will have no problem coming right back to this state when I snap my fingers and say 'sleep'. in fact you'll feel so relaxed you might go even further, thats right, even deeper into relaxation, into trance than before." the I wake them and when I give the command they either just look at me and I coax them into relaxing or they look at me blankly before consciously going hack into the previous state.

Am I going about this the wrong way?

Also, I plant the word after the deepener and balloon/book exercise.

Hi there, my fiirst hypnotee was my cousin who was very easy to hypnotise. Trying this on my younger brother and sister and the other hand is proving dificult! I have read that it is more dificult to hypnotise someone who is close to you and is familiar with the way you speak and act in normal circumstances. I have tried multiple diferent techniques to induce trance but i never manage to capture them in trance and they just end up giving me an awkward look haha!
I am very much a beginner still and appreciate that my dificulties probably lie in my confidence as it is dificult to keep tonality and behaviour "normal" when hypnotising. Anyone have any techniques i can try that might be more effective with siblings? Thanks :)

Repression and Regression

As you may or may not be aware, there are two “parts” of the brain, the Conscious and Subconscious which both have different “functions” in our psyche. The Subconscious is responsible for our instincts and irrational fears. There is no logic and no judgment. This is the area that repressed memories are located. In the Conscious there is judgement and logic, and rational thought.

Now as shown in the enclosed, is a pdf file (repression mechanism) which has a graph on it, the writing underneath clearly states what the graph shows in regards to how our subconscious perceives memories as threats and how it “buries” those memories in order to keep one safe. The other (repressed memory path) with the animals on it shows how those repressed memories can be “dredged” up throughout everyday life and how one memory can lead to another, and so on.

Now repression occurs when the subconscious perceives a threat to oneself that would compromise the function of the organism, and in order to keep one safe it “buries” the memory; and by memory I mean sights, sounds, scents and anything experienced by the person at that time. Sigmund Freud said that it was guilt that caused a memory to be repressed, but some argue that this is not the case. Terence Watts argues that it is vulnerability that causes the subconscious to hide the memory. This is so the conscious is not aware of the event and things can carry on going as normal, as if nothing ever happened.

These memories can remain in this place for years, and without warning crop up as something has stimulated these memorise to resurface; something that is similar to the original trauma. The subconscious then reacts in a way to “push” the organism away from the event as to keep the organism safe from the threat. Such as a Panic Attack or Anxiety Attack, any form of symptomology. The thing that caused the memory to surface, may or may not be, in any way shape or form, the same as the original trauma, it is only perceived to be by the subconscious. Of course this will be very bewildering for the person in concern as the subconscious has perceived this threat, and the conscious will not be aware of it, it is in fact invisible.

There will normally be some sort of rationalisation to the symptomology, and almost always that rationalisation will be associated with the trigger event (the perceived threat) that set this action into being.

Once the repression has been brought to the surface, all sorts of things will set off the avoidance action, as if the subconscious has suddenly realised that life isn’t safe after all.

One has to remember that where the memory has been buried is like a time capsule, and there are “handles” on the outside of that time capsule that has no connection to the threat, but are connected to the repressed memory, things such as a scent, a sound, certain tunes or patterns, doors or door handles of a certain design, etc. Whenever one of these handles are encountered the symptomology will be triggered once more.

This mechanism is truly brilliant in its design, made to keep us aware of and safe from an incident, automatically. As well as this, the reason why the original “threat” was kept form us may not be because it was too hideous to remember, but simply because if we were able to remember it, it would then cease to work as a “safety net”

Finally, it may not just be a whole event, or a whole memory that is repressed; as a memory is made up of three parts – The Event, Physiological Reaction, Emotional Response. Essentially these three are related but separate memories, and any one or all three of them can be repressed.

What is Regression?

Regression is a tool used in Hypnoanalysis which is an area in which I wish to specialise. Now there are numerous forms of Regreesive Techniques that can be applies to a client to help relieve the symptomology. Regression is a tool used to help resolve an Initial Sensitising Event that happened at one point in a persons life. Regression must be used only by a skilled Hypnoanalysist who has adequate training in the field and can cope with Abreactions and Revivications.

"What is an Abreaction?" I hear you shout, well it's the process of catharsis which is releasing emotions built up over a period of time, to allow freedom from symptomology, this is coupled, normally, with a revivication which is reliving the memory in perfect clarity as if it were happening at that moment in time. One must be trained in able to deal with an Abreaction and Revivication and how to spot them when they happen.

Past Life Regression Therapy is part of this but I shall cover that seperately.

There are two main ways to induce Regression into a client, however a word of warning. Please read it before even attempting.

1: DO NOT USE THIS FOR EXPERIMENTATION ON ANYONE

2: BEFORE USE HAVE ADEQUATE INSURANCE TO COVER ONE

3: HAVE A COMPLETE UNDERSTANDING OF THE HYPNOTHERAPEUTIC ENVIRONMENT INCLUDING SUGGESTION THERAPY

4: NEVER USE IT FOR OUR OWN GAINS

5: NEVER USE ANY FORM OF HYPNOANALYSIS ON ANYONE SUFFERING FROM A MENTAL ILLNESS WITHOUT THE QUALIFICATIONS TO PROVE IT

So there are two ways of Regression a person,

1: Direct Regression
2: Free Association

Direct Regression

Direct Regression is the simpler, and more direct (hence the name) route in helping the client Reviciate and Abreact, this process seeks to track down the Initial Sensitising Event, or ISE, (to be covered in another post) which has caused the symptomology. The conflicts that have arisen from the event can then be released. This form of Regression is perfect for those clients that can function normally with no adverse effects on their everyday life, except for one area, such as a Fear or Phobia. Anything where the Symptom is mostly emotional or psychological in nature.

This form of Regression is a perfect way to help the client alleviate symptoms and they normally aware of the process, and what progress is being made at the same time. This form of Therapy is normally quick.

As well as this, compared to Free Association, there is a lot of Client -> Therapist interaction and thus can achieve results where Free Association can fail. The "side-effect" will be increased self confidence and generally lowered stress levels.

However since it follows such a narrow path, it can leave other areas that need exploring undiscovered, so it may be plausible to assume that there will be conflict(s) that are left unresolved and thus creating a whole new Symptomology, or even a resurfacing of the old one. It is also unlikely to work if there are multiple Symptoms creating the whole Symptomology.
